The most direct and immediate way to help LFC is to provide financial
support so that our attorneys and social workers can continue to make a real
difference in the lives of thousands of children in foster care each year.
Here is just one example:
Rose was just seven when she entered foster care. Quiet and withdrawn, she
was failing in school and despondent in her foster home. When interviewed by
her LFC social worker, signs of possible sexual abuse led to an immediate
referral to the Director of LFC's child sexual abuse project. In their
interview, Rose disclosed the horrifying details of the physical and sexual
abuse she had suffered at the hands of her mother's boyfriend. Rose was
referred to a specialized therapy program for victims her age and began to
thrive. The next time she visited LFC, a smiling secure child asked why she
couldn't live with her father. LFC was able to locate her father, evaluate
his home and help him understand the special support Rose would need to
fully recover. LFC obtained a court order placing Rose in her father's care
where her life can truly begin again.
Due to the elimination of services, overburdened Family Courts, and a
dysfunctional child welfare system, our young clients must rely on the
vigilance and advocacy provided by Lawyers For Children more than ever
before. In our inaugural year, LFC was assigned to just 34 cases. This year,
we expect to represent well over 4,000 children.
